Uzbekistan visa rules for Indian passport holders

Uzbekistan did open up to Indian travellers, and the headlines said “visa free”. What actually arrived on 1 September 2026 is narrower and worth reading properly: 30 days without an Uzbek visa, but only if you already hold a valid multiple-entry visa from one of a short list of countries, and only if you can show an air ticket out. If you do not hold one of those visas, nothing has changed and you still need the e-visa.

How to apply, step by step

The order matters more than people expect. Do these out of sequence and you end up with a lapsed booking or an appointment you cannot fill.

  1. 1

    Check whether you actually qualify

Look at the visa in your passport: which country issued it, is it a tourist or business visa, is it multiple entry, and does it cover your whole trip. All four matter.

  2. 2

If you do not qualify, apply for the e-visa

Straightforward, online, around USD 20. This is still the normal route for most Indian travellers.

  3. 3

    Book the onward flight

Required by the scheme itself, and checked at the departure gate in India. A held reservation with a live PNR satisfies it without paying for a fare.

  4. 4

Book accommodation for the whole stay

It also handles your registration, which is the part travellers forget until they are leaving.

  5. 5

Carry the qualifying visa where you can show it

The visa-free right depends on a document in another passport page. Have it findable, not buried.

What the application actually requires

  • A valid multiple-entry tourist or business visa from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK, the USA or a Schengen state. This is the condition the whole arrangement rests on.
  • That visa must still be valid for the whole of your stay. The visa-free right lasts only as long as it does.
  • An air ticket onward to your own country or a third country. The scheme names this explicitly, so it is not merely an airline preference here.
  • Passport valid six months beyond arrival, with blank pages.
  • Accommodation for the stay, which also handles your registration.
On unpaid reservations Uzbekistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the visa-free list and the e-visa system. Note that the MFA's general visa-free list still does not include India for ordinary passports: the 30-day arrangement is the separate scheme for holders of qualifying third-country visas, in force since 1 September 2026.

Four ways this application goes wrong

None of these are exotic. Every one of them is fixable in the ten minutes before you hit submit.

Reading “Uzbekistan is visa free for Indians” and stopping there

The headline is true only for people holding a qualifying US, UK, Schengen, Japanese, Canadian, Australian, NZ or Korean visa. Without one you need the e-visa, and no announcement changed that.

Holding a single-entry visa

The scheme is written around multiple-entry tourist and business visas. A single-entry US visa is not obviously covered, so confirm before you rely on it rather than finding out at the airport.

A qualifying visa that expires mid-trip

Your right to be in Uzbekistan without a visa lasts exactly as long as the foreign visa does. If it runs out on day nine of a fourteen-day trip, the rest of that trip is a problem.

No onward ticket

This scheme names an onward air ticket as part of the condition, so it is not just the usual airline liability check. Turning up one-way gives the agent a straightforward reason to stop you.

Uzbekistan: your questions

Is Uzbekistan visa free for Indians?

Only conditionally. Since 1 September 2026 an Indian passport holder can stay 30 days without an Uzbek visa, but only while holding a valid multiple-entry tourist or business visa from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK, the USA or a Schengen state, and carrying an onward air ticket. Without one of those visas you still need the e-visa.

What if I do not have a US, UK or Schengen visa?

Then nothing has changed for you: apply for the Uzbek e-visa, which is online and costs around USD 20. The visa-free announcement does not cover ordinary Indian passports on their own.

Does a single-entry US visa count?

The scheme is written around multiple-entry tourist and business visas, so a single-entry visa is not clearly covered. Confirm with the Uzbek mission before travelling rather than testing it at check-in.

Do I need a return ticket?

Yes, and here it is part of the rule rather than only an airline preference: the arrangement requires an air ticket onward to your own or a third country. A held reservation with a verifiable PNR satisfies it without buying a fare.

Do I need to register where I stay?

Yes. Hotels do it automatically. Staying privately or in an unregistered rental makes it your responsibility, and it is sometimes checked on departure.

How long is the flight from India?

Delhi to Tashkent is a little over three hours direct, which makes it one of the shortest genuinely foreign trips available from north India.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Tashkent to Samarkand on the Afrosiyob high speed train takes a bit over two hours and costs a fraction of a flight. Book online in advance, because it sells out and it is the best way to move between the big three cities.
  • Carry cash. Card acceptance is improving in Tashkent and thin everywhere else, and som notes come in large denominations that confuse first timers.
  • Registan in Samarkand is worth doing twice, once at opening and once after dark when it is lit. The light in between is flat and the photographs are disappointing.
  • Uzbek plov is a lunch dish, not a dinner one. The good places sell out by early afternoon and close.
  • October and April are the two months worth planning around. July heat in the desert cities is genuinely punishing.
