China visa for Indian passport holders

There is no shortcut into mainland China. No visa on arrival, no e-visa, no waiver for Indian passports. You apply in person at a Chinese Visa Application Service Center, give fingerprints, and wait. The one piece of good news is the fee, which China cut for Indian applicants and has held down through December 2026.

How to apply, step by step

The order matters more than people expect. Do these out of sequence and you end up with a lapsed booking or an appointment you cannot fill.

  1. 1

Fill the online form and get pre-approval

Added in December 2025 and now the first step, not the last.

  2. 2

    Book a CVASC appointment

New Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata. In person, with biometrics.

  3. 3

    Assemble the file

Passport, photo, itinerary, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements.

  4. 4

    Submit and give fingerprints

Both happen at the same appointment.

  5. 5

    Collect, or pay for courier

Standard processing is 4 to 7 working days after submission.

What it costs

What you payHow much
Tourist visa, single entryRoughly Rs2,900 visa fee plus Rs2,107 CVASC service chargeAbout Rs5,000
Double entryVisa fee, before the service chargeAbout Rs4,400
Six-month multiple entryVisa fee, before the service chargeAbout Rs5,900
Twelve-month multiple entryVisa fee, before the service chargeAbout Rs8,800

Checked 2026-09-25. Government fees move, sometimes with a month’s notice and sometimes with none. Treat this as a planning figure and confirm the number you will actually be charged at Chinese Visa Application Service Center before you pay.

What the application actually requires

  • Passport valid six months beyond arrival, with blank pages for the sticker.
  • Fingerprint biometrics at the CVASC, in person. Waived under 14, over 70, and if you gave them for a Chinese visa in the last five years.
  • Confirmed flight booking in and out, with dates matching the form.
  • Hotel bookings for every night, or an invitation letter if you are staying with someone.
  • Bank statements, usually six months, showing you can fund the trip.
  • A day-by-day itinerary. China asks for more detail here than most.
On unpaid reservations The Chinese Visa Application Service Center handles submission, biometrics and collection for the embassy in New Delhi and the missions in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Four ways this application goes wrong

None of these are exotic. Every one of them is fixable in the ten minutes before you hit submit.

Assuming an e-visa exists

It does not, for Indian passports. Sites offering one are selling you a form-filling service at best.

Booking the appointment late

Biometrics are in person and slots in Delhi and Mumbai go quickly in peak season. The visa cannot be started without one.

A vague itinerary

China asks for dates, cities and hotels. 'Touring Beijing and Shanghai' is the kind of answer that gets the file queried.

Forgetting the pre-approval step

An online pre-approval stage was added in December 2025. End to end, budget 10 to 15 working days rather than the 4 to 7 the counter quotes.

China: your questions

Do Indians need a visa for China?

Yes, always. There is no visa on arrival and no e-visa for Indian passport holders. You apply in advance through a Chinese Visa Application Service Center and give fingerprints in person.

How much does a China visa cost from India?

About Rs5,000 all in for a single-entry tourist visa: roughly Rs2,900 in visa fee plus about Rs2,107 in CVASC service charge. Reduced rates for Indian applicants run to 31 December 2026.

How long does a China visa take?

Four to seven working days after your appointment. Counting the online pre-approval step introduced in December 2025, plan for 10 to 15 working days end to end.

Do I need hotel and flight bookings to apply?

Yes. China wants a dated itinerary with flights in and out and accommodation for every night. A held reservation satisfies this without paying for a fare before the visa is decided.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Reduced fees for Indian applicants run to 31 December 2026. They have been extended before, but do not plan a trip around the assumption.
  • Google, WhatsApp and Instagram do not work on Chinese networks. Download offline maps and set up an alternative before you fly, not after.
  • Alipay and WeChat Pay now take foreign cards, which removes the old problem of being unable to pay for anything without a Chinese bank account.
  • High-speed rail beats domestic flights between most city pairs and books out well ahead during public holidays.
