Ireland visa for Indian passport holders

The single most expensive mistake with Ireland is assuming your Schengen visa covers it. It does not. Ireland is in the EU but outside Schengen, and it runs its own visa system with its own online portal. The compensation is the British-Irish Visa Scheme, which can cover Ireland and the UK on one visa, and which almost nobody applying from India knows exists.

How to apply, step by step

The order matters more than people expect. Do these out of sequence and you end up with a lapsed booking or an appointment you cannot fill.

  1. 1

    Complete the AVATS online application

The Irish visa system is online-first. You finish the form, then print the summary sheet it produces.

  2. 2

Book and attend a VFS appointment

Documents and biometrics in person. This is the point the clock actually starts.

  3. 3

    Assemble the supporting file

Passports current and previous, ties to India, accommodation, insurance, finances.

  4. 4

    Wait, without buying a fare

Roughly 20 to 25 working days from receipt at the Embassy, longer in peak season.

  5. 5

    Collect your passport

Through VFS, or by the courier option if you paid for it.

Checked 2026-09-25. Government fees move, sometimes with a month’s notice and sometimes with none. Treat this as a planning figure and confirm the number you will actually be charged at Irish Immigration Service Delivery before you pay.

What the application actually requires

  • Passport valid at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave Ireland.
  • Photocopies of every page of all previous passports, where you still have them. Ireland asks for this more thoroughly than most.
  • Evidence of ties to India: employment, property, family. This is the part the visa officer is actually weighing.
  • Accommodation confirmed for the stay.
  • Travel and medical insurance.
  • Financial evidence showing you can fund the trip.
On unpaid reservations Immigration Service Delivery runs the AVATS online portal. Applications from India are lodged online, then documents and biometrics go to VFS Global.

Four ways this application goes wrong

None of these are exotic. Every one of them is fixable in the ten minutes before you hit submit.

Assuming Schengen covers Ireland

It does not, and this is the most common Ireland mistake by a wide margin. Ireland is outside the Schengen area and issues its own visa. A Schengen visa gets you nothing at Dublin.

Paying for flights before the decision

Ireland states plainly that flight bookings are not required, and that anyone who books before receiving their visa does so at their own risk. Take them at their word.

Entering the wrong country first on BIVS

If your visa is endorsed BIVS you must enter the country that issued it first. Irish visa means Ireland first, UK visa means the UK first. Get it the wrong way round and the scheme does not apply.

Counting the wait from the online form

Processing starts when your biometrics are submitted at VFS, not when you finish the AVATS form. The Embassy advises applying at least eight weeks ahead.

Ireland: your questions

Does a Schengen visa work for Ireland?

No. Ireland is in the European Union but not in the Schengen area, and it issues its own visas. A Schengen visa does not admit you to Ireland, and this is the single most common mistake Indian applicants make.

Do I need a flight booking for an Irish visa?

Ireland says flight bookings are not required, and warns that anyone who books before receiving a visa does so at their own risk. If you want to show an intended itinerary, a held reservation does that without committing money to a fare. Accommodation and insurance, by contrast, are asked for.

What is the British-Irish Visa Scheme?

A scheme that lets Indian nationals resident in India travel to both Ireland and the UK on a single short-stay visa, if that visa is endorsed 'BIVS'. You must enter the issuing country first: Irish visa means you land in Ireland first, British visa means the UK first. Stays are up to 90 days.

How long does an Ireland visa take from India?

Around 20 to 25 working days from when the Embassy receives your application, counted from your VFS biometrics rather than the AVATS form. The Embassy advises applying at least eight weeks before you travel.

Worth knowing before you go

  • The visa fee is an administration fee. It is not refunded if you are refused or if you withdraw, so get the file right the first time.
  • The British-Irish Visa Scheme is open to Indian nationals living in India. A visa endorsed 'BIVS' covers Ireland and the UK for short stays, which is worth asking about if you were going to apply for both anyway.
  • Dublin is expensive and books out early, particularly in summer and around rugby weekends. Accommodation evidence is easier to produce if you are not leaving it late.
  • Ireland uses the euro. Northern Ireland is part of the UK and uses pounds, which catches people driving north for the Giant's Causeway.
