What the application actually requires

  • Passport valid at least six months from the date you arrive.
  • For the free certificate: a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, Schengen area, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Korea. An e-visa from those countries does not count.
  • Confirmed onward or return ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation for the stay.
  • Taiwan Arrival Card, submitted online within three days before you land. Compulsory since 1 October 2025.
On unpaid reservations The Bureau of Consular Affairs issues both the Travel Authorization Certificate and the e-visa, and publishes the current list of qualifying countries.

Four ways this application goes wrong

None of these are exotic. Every one of them is fixable in the ten minutes before you hit submit.

Assuming an expired US or Schengen visa still counts

The qualifying visa has to be valid, or used within the stated window. An expired one does not open the certificate route.

Missing the arrival card

The Taiwan Arrival Card became compulsory on 1 October 2025 and catches people who last visited before that.

Treating the certificate as a visa

It is an authorisation to travel and gives 14 days. If you need longer, apply for a visitor visa instead.

Trying to use an e-visa as your qualifying document

Taiwan does not accept another country's e-visa as the qualifying permit. It has to be a full visa or residence permit.

Apply for your Taiwan visa

We file it for you, and the flight and hotel bookings the application asks for come from us too, dated to match.

Taiwan: your questions

Do Indians need a visa for Taiwan?

Yes, but if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, Schengen area, Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Korea, you can get a free Travel Authorization Certificate online instead, good for 14 days.

Is the Taiwan Travel Authorization Certificate really free?

Yes. It is issued online by the Bureau of Consular Affairs at no cost, usually straight away. Sites charging for it are charging for form filling.

What is the Taiwan Arrival Card?

A free online form, compulsory since 1 October 2025, submitted within three days before you arrive. It is separate from your visa or certificate and catches a lot of returning visitors.

Does an old US visa still qualify?

It has to be valid, or used within the window Taiwan publishes. An expired visa does not open the free certificate route, and an e-visa from another country never does.

Worth knowing before you go

  • The free certificate is good for 14 days and cannot be extended. If your trip is longer, apply for the visitor visa from the start.
  • EasyCard covers metro, buses, convenience stores and most of Taipei. Buy one at the airport MRT station.
  • The high-speed rail runs the length of the west coast in under two hours and is far better value booked early.
  • Taiwan is one of the easiest places in Asia to eat vegetarian: look for the Buddhist swastika symbol outside a restaurant, which marks a fully vegetarian kitchen.
